Healthy beardie stopped eating

Drakken Sep 27, 2006 07:22 PM

I've had my BD for over a year. He bromated from Nov to March last year and then he was very active. He was eating and pooping like mad then recently he stopped.

Before I take him to the vet I wanted to get some opinions on if there is a chance he is bromating again or if there is something else wrong.

Anything else going on with him health wise? Changes to his environment? Has he stoped defacating all together?? WhaTs his enclosurelike? What kinda substrate do you use?

Could it be an impaction issue? Could he have gotten sick from a newly aquired animal?

His enclosure is a 40G breeder tank with heat lights and a 8.0 Derest bulb. There has been no changes or any added animals to his home. He is on a washed playsand bed that he has had for many months with no problems. Last time he ate he chowed on meal worms then pooped a big time. After that he stopped eating and poopoing.

Any ideas?

That's what I was thinking but I wanted to see if anyone had a different opinion before I go to the vet.

Yea man get taht poor lil guy to a vet. Can you feel a hard lump in his belly if you slide your finger along his under side?

If so you gotta problem.

I dont remember how old he is but especially if he is a youngen please dump the sand and get some slate tile or shelf liner or some reagular tiles that are semi rough for traction for him to live on.
I know people will probably say after readign this that they have used sand for ages and noproblems with it. Well if there werent problems with it then so many liazrds would be experiencing impaction problems. Ofcourse this is just my opinion and you can take it for what you think its worth.
Lots of mealies are said to be harmful and cause impaction to as there outter shell can cause a beardie to become impacted due to lack of being able to digest a large quantity. I feed mine mealies every now and then but not as a major food source, mainly i put a few in his salad just for fun.
Ill stop rambling man sorry to all that had to read this, its just sad to hear of problems like this. Good luck with your lil guy and i hope all turns out well!

He pooped and was active but there is more to the story. Read my post on My cat was IN beardie's tank!.

ive had problems in the past with impaction the vet told me to use .25 oc 1 cc of olive oil or veggie oil this will loosen an impaction and will be like a roto rooter poop works very well and metamucil will also do the same.

I called my Vet and she wants to see him tomorrow. I'll post the results of the visit.

I am lucky to have a certified herptologist 20 minutes away.

I took Beardie to the Vet last night and he had to stay the night. He has an abscess in his throat and the Vet isn't sure what it is. Hopefully it's just an abscess that can be lanced and drained and not a tumor or cancer.

Waiting to hear from the Vet...

Again, this is from experience with Collared Lizards, but I suspect might be similar... when they want to brumate, they may stop eating, but they also are sleepy. Instead of seeking the basking spot, they find the cool places in the enclosure and sleep there. Sleeping more hours, and failing to eat because of being too sleepy were the signs that my collaris were going to brunate... not just the cessation of eating by itself.

So I go with everyone else in saying see a vet.

He is not active anymore either and sleeps on the cool side of the tank all day. I forgot to mention that.
