Corn eat Corn

Oxyrhopus Sep 27, 2006 07:43 PM

This recent batch of corns shed and they were eager to feed - a bit eager then I expected. Only 2 days after they shed I moved their shoebox to the kitchen to separate them and then go pick-up some pinks when I watched one corn eye another and suddenly nab it and wrap it and try to eat it. And I mean eat. The corn wrapping did not constrict and hold like it was killing a rodent, it wrapped and bit and chewed its way towards the head of the other corn. Of course I stopped the action after getting a photo of this action. And these fellows were not even starved. I had a container of frogs nearby and maybe that sparked something in them? Whatever it was, I was glad to be present to stop this or else I would have one dead and one sick corn.

This is why separation at hatching is a good idea.

I hope they keep this picture up for everyone to see. I even had a customer that kept a corn and a ball python in the same 55 gallon tank for over a year. Even after us telling him it was not a good idea. Then one morning he came in and the corn had eaten the ball python. The ball was 16 months old and the corn was an sdult. I also personally know of them eating kings, racers, other corns, water snakes and even had a picture sent of a wild caught that regurged a hatchling indigo. Snakes are the perfect shape to be eaten by other snakes. Thanks for the picture it is worth a million words.

I've had a similar thing happen.

One of my litters of creamcicles had a particularly large male who was very aggressive during feeding. He attacked a littermate and I think he would have eaten it if I hadn't put a stop to it. He was determined and it took some delicate work to get them apart unharmed. After that incident I implemented the "Draybar - No Cohabitation" rule.

LOL this was looong before I had even heard of KS.com, let alone Sensei Jimmy!

Hai!

Back in the 80's I had a big home-made tank with five wild caught black rat snakes in it.
Hell, I didn't know any better either.
I learned my lesson one day while feeding them.
I would just push them to separate areas in the tank and feed them.
Every once in a while I would have to prod one in a diferent direction if it went towards a mouse other then it's own, but nothing too worrysome.
Then one day I got a little complacent and looked down to see one of the snakes had another's head partially in it's mouth.
It took me about 15 minutes to separate them without hurting the "victim".
That was it for me.
I never kept snakes together after that. At least not to live.
Sometimes for a few minutes while cleaning habitats or breeding time but I learned my lesson.
No cohabitation here.
Just not worth it.
