eastern hog babies

jyohe Sep 27, 2006 07:58 PM

eastern hog....wild.....week later laid 39 eggs,.......(for a friend)........all hatched in like 45 days or so......

he threw frozen thawed in with 10 of them after scenting them with toad......8 ate.......

he then threw 10 of them a frozen thawed unscented......6 ate...

.....some have eaten many times without scent....like 8 of them......another 7 eat with just the slightest touch of toad scent and at times no scent I think also....

he didn't even try all the babies......he is releasing them (already did actually) and wants them empty for the brumation they are facing now......

he released them at the same spot he found the mother.......he also released her the weekend after she laid.......

.......glad they made it to hatch at least....they are on their own from now...

any little help is help........

/..........just info so you people know......baby hogs will eat frozen thawed pinks.......non scented.......

some will eat unscented right off the bat and others will not. I do not scent my pinks with toads. I have been having some luck with tuna water though. I have one new male who was feeding on toad/frog scented pinkies for the breeder, but once I got him.. no scenting with toads. Plain pinks was ignored, but dipped it in tuna water and he was all over it and scarfed it down... go back to unscented and he wouldn't touch it. tonight at feeding, I dipped in tuna water and it was gone in like 45 seconds.

yea......

first.I know I am not really a hog person......

.yea..tuna water and frog or toad and anoles even.......I have friends that each prefer one or the other.....tuna is obviously the easiest to get.......

I have an adult tri-color that needs anole.......

...

I just wanted to make sure people try without scent first....they probably yend to start off with some scent or another within a feeding or two from hatching ......they get scared too fast.......

..cornsnake babies here that don't eat will eat anole or Peromyscus mice usually...but I have gotten to the point for a few years that if they don't eat mice they are left to do what they want....eat or die.....
