Juan m Sep 27, 2006 08:55 PM

How long can a thawed rat pup be out before it begins to get bad and can it be refrozen without going bad?

Hey Juan, I wouldn't refreeze again just toss it out. This what I do for my boas. defrost it For a few hours, and when ready put it in a zip lock bag and put it in some hot water and let sit for 30-40min. Snakes sense the heat and smell. Just lay it down in his cage and leave him alone for a hour and like magic it should be gone. If you just got him, let him settle in his enclosure for a few days before you try to feed him. And try feeding him at night. Good luck!!

You should handle the rat pups as you would any meat you are planning on eating yourself. (ie. hamburger, chicken, pork chops, ect.) Rat pups are a meat product. They say 4 hours is the max, but I personally don't want to touch anything left out over a hour. Of course that's just me. Your snake might not mind 2 hours. Otherwise I usally flush it and try again in a day or two.
