Quick question about Bull Snakes

waspinator421 Sep 28, 2006 03:45 AM

I was just wondering if musking and/or pooing is common of bull snakes. I've only held one bull snake before, and it was real nice. But I can't judge the species on one snake.

Thanks for your time!

Hi

I bullsnakes genrally do not musk. Their defense tactic is mostly by bluffing and intimidation by hissing and puffing(although some may actually bite). They sometimes also do this reverse crawl if handled or cornered. Seems like they're trying to get some distance while keeping an eye on the threat before they bolt out. Hope it helps.

It is very rare to get musked but like what was already stated, the intimidation factor is their main defense. It will be quite impressive when agitated. Most relax pretty quickly though, but they do like to constantly move. Bulls are not one to just sit in your hand like some snakes do.

Thanks for your quick replies. Yeah, the one I held was really squirmy. Didn't mind being held, but wanted to keep moving. For my other question, what size tub would you recommend for bulls? I may add some to my collection in the future, and if I do so I want to get the right size rack.

Thanks again for your time!

If I remember correctly, most of the tubs that I use for the adults are about 20x6.5x39 inches. This seems to be ok as they usually don't completely stretch out all the time. I also have another cage that is about 4 feet that they can roam around in from time to time. Most of your pits are not much into climbing up (they can and will sometimes) so the height doesn't have to be quite tall.

I am always uncomfortable with generalizations. As soon as they are stated there are exceptions. In my experience it is rare, BUT... There is nothing quite so disgusting than gettin' hosed by a biggin'. I have endured it over the years with a few 6' plus Bulls and once with a 7' Pine. To quote the ancient Holy Book, The Book of Bob, chapter 33:3, "It doth stinketh!"
