Forum Poll: How long before your first hog?

Colchicine Aug 05, 2003 08:34 PM

What the heck, since everyone is complaining...

How long were you interested in herps before you got interested in hognoses?

Me? Only a year or so. We had an extra at work and I took it home because it was small (male Western), then I fell in love with them.

No hogs here yet... but that will soon change.

I've recently fallen in love with hogs, and will hopefully be able to find some albinos, hypos and hets from a reputable source this year.

I've been keeping ball pythons for over 5 years, but just started breeding this season. I'm working with albinos, lemon pastels, and caramel albinos (hets) and should produce some super pastels next season.

Been keeping and breeding leopard geckos for quite some time now.

Do you happen to know when albino hogs first hit the scene?

Well I guess about fifteen years before I got my first one. I got my first snake when I was 10. Ive had at least one ever since but over the past five five years ive really started to get more and more. Ive wanted to get a hognose for a couple of years but was turned off by lots of stories about how they can be difficult. I finally said screw it and got one about 2 years ago. Unfortunately it died a few months later. My girlfriend then got me a pair for my birthday. One of them did fine for a while and then stopped eating and you know what happened. The other one is fine thank god. She eats everything including my fingers. Ok thats my life story, sorry if that was too boring. But they are one of the coolest snakes around, even if they dont like living with me. EP

I started herping in 1972 in Oklahoma. Didn't find any hogs there. Moved to Australia from 74-78 and didn't find any hogs there either (Hmmmm??).

Finally moved back to the US in 1978 and my first chance to herp (spring '79) I found an adult Eastern in a greenbelt area within Houston. I was slightly pumped, to say the least. Later found they were quite common along the bayou there.

First Western (Mexican) was in Van Horn, TX in August 1990.

Never had one. They were plentiful on my Grandad's farm in Oklahoma growing up in the 1950's. The Hognoses and bullsnakes were plentiful then. Never thought about trying to keep one...I wonder if they are still there????

I grew up in Houston Texas. Home of zillions of toads and tons of hognoses.
In 2002 I bought my first CB western (Named Stumpy), and a month ago at the San Diego Show I got a hypo female (my girlfriend calls Pixie). I like westerns as much as the Easterns I grew up with.

I've been herping since the 1960s and just recently started keeping hogs. A friend who is insane about them gave me a pair and now I'm hooked.

Hi,
I started keeping snakes in college in 1985 when a friend gave me his non-eating WC Ball python. Sadly, after countless vet visits, he didn't survive.

Since then I have gone through a fair share of Milks, kings and boids to keep a few favorites:

1.0 Normal Sonoran gopher snake
1.0 Jungle Carpet python
1.1 Woma python
1.1 CornSpring Rosys
1.1 Limburg Albino rosys
1.2 Het Hypo Roughscale sand boa
1.0 Axanthic Brooksi

I first saw a picture of hognose on the net around four years ago. At first the nose kind of turned me off.
Then I saw them live at a local herp show about 2 years ago and just fell in love with them. They remind me a lot of my pituophis with their spunkiness and rough scales - a mini pit.

Now I currently have:
1.0 Albino
0.1 red Het albino
1.0 Hypo
1.0 DH hypo and PPA
0.1 normal

With
0.1 Hypo
0.1 PPA
1.1 red phase
Coming to join my collection this year.
