Babies in the Sun

gahlenfr Sep 28, 2006 01:03 PM

There is no substitute for the real thing. Here they are hanging out on a rock. The go out for a few hours each day providing the weather is good of course I am amazed at how well they eat considering it has only been a few days. They munched on adult fecal matter for the first day and after that they eat normal food....

They munched on adult fecal matter for the first day... really? is that what hatchling chucks eat? I guess it just seems gross to us.

They are cute - how big are they? They look "mature" for just a few days old! I'm not a chucker, thus all the questions

Good question! Chuckwallas, Uros and others need the bacteria from the fecal matter in order to get their digestive system going. They only do this for the first day or so and then they won't touch the stuff. As for thier size, they come fully equipped to deal with the world and have all of the instincts of the adults hence one of the first things they do is seek cover. It is funny to see them inflate their little bodies to wedge themselves in a crevice. I feed them a variety of greens and flowers and uromastyx pellets.

Those are not the restails are they? Did they ever lay? Tom

gahlenfr Sep 29, 2006 11:55 AM

Tom, those are the banded. One of my redtail females laid 10 days after these were. That means hopefully some will hatch next week. They are looking good so far..... I will post here if they do!

Great photos. I'll have to take my little one outside for some sun. Thanks for the idea.

I have seen chucks munch on the poo at almost one year old. I at least had one baby a couple years ago that would go poo divin' most all of the following summer after hatching.

NO KISSING IN THE LIPS!!!
