using vinager as a supplement on crickets

blueta Aug 05, 2003 08:39 PM

I was was at a recent herp show in hamburg, and a particular breeder (who's name I'll withold), was selling sub adult hl's. I have always been interested in them and proceded to ask some questions. He told me that the ones he had on display were captive born and raised on a diet of ONLY crickets, with every third feeding having the crickets sprayed with vinagar (sp?). I was very curious about this idea and have never heard of it. He assured me that's all they were ever fed, and it amazed me to see the age of them and to appear to be in good health. So, I was wondering if anyone here has heard of this before. Please don't respond with things like "stop trying to find an easier way, you must use ants, etc". I am merely interested in this method and was wondering if anyone has ever heard of it before. Thanks.

I was at an expo in White Plains NY, and picked up an adult horned lizard, and the breeder had said to spray the crickets with white vinegar. Unfortunately, we didnt get into why he suggested this. Ive tried it once, the first time we fed the lizard, and she ate them, but later spit it up. I am not sure if it was that the crickets were too big, that there was too much vinegar on them, or what, but we havent used the vinegar since and she hasnt spitten up since. I asked a few local pet store owners, and they claim to have never heard of the method before.
ill keep my eye on this post and see if anyone has anything to lend.
thanks
