Texas Indigo Range

How far West and North do TIs habituate? I'm in a verbal battle w/a customer of mine who swears he's seen them near the town of Alpine? I would think its too arid for them?? He works for the Union Pacific RR and is usually a reliable source for "sightings" though he's not a herper.

While they do get further north and west than most people think, they don't get that far. There are records from Val Verde county, and I wouldn't be all that skeptical of one in Terrel county, but Alpine isn't appropriate habitat.

Where they do occur at the edges of the range, it is along waterways. You aren't going to see one on a railway line in Alpine.

I am no expert but I did catch one last year in val Verde county and I almost alwats see them associated with railroad lines. Seems the small wooden bridges hold water for longer periods of time and make a fairly good hibernaculum within the tumbledown of rocks. I would tend to agree with Chris, but never say never!
