Retic w/burn, Maybe?? Help

CaseyHulse Aug 05, 2003 08:59 PM

I recieved an 8' tiger retic today with what I was told by a 3rd party was a heat burn on his belly. It looks awful, open wound with some necrotic tissue. I soaked him in 2 bathes of diluted peroxide/betadine and scrubbed some of the tissue, but I am not sure if this is a heat burn or something else. I have taken some pics and can email them, but I am not sure how to download them here. Any advice would be great. Casey thirtypt@aol.com

Does the "burn" extend the length of his body? Or is it just a small section? In either case, it may be a good idea to treat the open wounds with neosporin or a gel form triple antibiotic. The betadine solution should have helped too. If this wound does extend the length of his body and thus COULD be belly rot, after treating him keep his cage/substrate as dry as possible. Get him to a reputable reptile vet if he doesn't show improvement in the next few days.

Yes it is the length of his body, but only in sections. Is this infectious? Bacterial? Will Baytril help? Thanx for the help!

It IS bacterial, but you shouldn't need more than a topical antibiotic. Injectable, subcutaneous antibiotics can be very hard on the snake's system and should only be used in extreme cases. They can also cause serious scars from subsequent abcesses at injection sites. I would not use Baytril unless you hear right from a reputable vet that the snake MUST have it.

I see a lot of bell rot it is usually easy to fix . Just keep him in a dry cage and put betadine on two to three times a day. Do not give him but a small bowl of water one of they keys is to keep him dry do not use any oil base antibiotics. I have never seen this in my 16 year at my shop not work give me a call if you need some help my cell is 714-402-4444 I could explain a few other details I only type about 1 word per hour LOL
