Very old and very low resolution PIC.

Jeff Clark Sep 28, 2006 11:27 PM

My brother was going through some old newspaper clippings and found this PIC in a clipping from the Titusville Florida Star Advocate. These are my brother and four of our friends with some of our pet snakes. This PIC was taken around 1966. At that time Eastern Indigos were fairly common in central Florida and we found them fairly often. Our Eastern Indigos were opportunistic feeders and would eat most anything we offered to them. Some of them would even eat toads. They did seem to like Yellow Ratsnakes more than any other meal. We did some road hunting (with my dad driving) back then and often found injured snakes at night. Any injured Yellow Rat or Corn got fed to the Indigos.

Standing left to right: Tim Hubinger holding a black racer, Frank Hubinger holding a Yellow Ratsnake, Dave Clark holding a small Eastern Indigo, Dave Valentine holding an Eastern Indigo. Sitting in front is Bob Robertson holding a Cornsnake.

I find it interesting that of the five boys there holding their snakes, the two boys holding the largest snakes, don't have control of the snakes head. I guess it shows the true docile nature of Eastern Indigos, as the other species can be a little nippy when wild caught at times. Thanks for the pic and renewed memories of a childhood long ago. That a neat pic and clearly shows how common these snakes used to be. Wish we could rool back the time clock, at least in THAT respect.

Hi Jeff Are you still in the Titusville area? I live in Mims. I would be close to your age. I also used to find indigos back when it was legal to catch them. Buddy.

...I live in Savannah GA. I get back to Titusville every couple of months. I have relatives in Mims and Titusville.
