rudis Chameleons

ethan3016 Sep 29, 2006 09:45 AM

Hi,

Does anyone have any Chamaeleo rudis? I'm thinking of getting either a pair of rudis or jackson's chameleons and want to know your impressions. I live in Massachusetts, and figure a mountain species is best for me climate wise. Plus, I like the smaller size of these two species. While, I have close to 10 years experience keeping lizards (bearded dragons) this would be my first chameleon pet. The classifieds on kingsnake.com have some imported rudis listed, would these be an ok choice? I'm a little hesitant to start with imports, but want to get some more experienced opinions. Does anyone here breed these species? Thanks for any and all information!

I may be wrong, but I think Tyler Stewart at Bluebeast Reptile is working with that species. I think most people will recommend purchasing CBB chameleons for the first foray into chameleon keeping. The WC specimens are often intolerant to a captive environment and possibly parasitic. If you decide to purchase WC, go with a reputable importer who has treated the imports and kept them for a few weeks to acclimate them before selling them. Good luck. Chams are addictive and I think you'll soon find yourself with several. Diane

Yeah, I've had some experience with them. The wild caughts I had I picked myself, which gives me (or you if you can pick from a big group) a huge advantage. Mine all came with some minor parasite problems, but that's pretty typical with any WC chameleons.

Sorry, didn't mean to post that yet.... Anyways, it's a pretty hardy species if you can keep them watered. The kids are cute and are born pretty big, similar sized to a baby panther. I had 2 females drop babies, averaging about 10 babies each with zero dead babies (slugs). Here's some baby pics, they had cool patterning and did well:

Hi Tyler,

Thanks for the info. and the great pictures. Will you have any of those babies available for sale in the near future? I'd be interested in a sexed pair.

I actually sold the entire group of babies to a guy that wants to get a Rudis group going. I sold the adults before that, just running low on space and it's hard for me to keep montanes in Vegas summers unless they're sleeping next to me.
