Using a stone for a basking spot

chili_con_parmi Sep 29, 2006 10:36 AM

Hi,

Is it ok to use a large stone for my lizard to bask on, not a hot rock, I have a spot light for basking. My lizard is a Green Iguana, I was going to but a large log for him under the spot light but someone suggested a large stone instead, is it ok or will the stone get too hot.

Thank you

Dave

The stone most likely will not get too hot and a basking light above a stone is a much better idea than a hot rock.

While the stone would be ideal for a bearded dragon or other type of land lover the iguana likes to climb so a branch under the spotlight would be much better for him. Your friend may have suggested the stone since they hold heat better than wood. Regardless, for a tree dweller branches are preferred since he wants to climb.

Just to be safe you may want to put a thermometer on the spot nearest to the bulb to check the temp. And make sure the lizard can not come in contact with the bulb.
