IBD in rainbows?

aaronblack Sep 29, 2006 01:18 PM

Are BRB's succeptible to IBD? Im thinking of buying a baby but I don't want to take any chances of bringing IBD in with it. Also, has anyone ever had any problems with using cypress mulch for substrate? Thanks

There have been cases of IBD in Rainbow Boas. If you keep new animals quarantined for 6 months and keep external parasites completely eradicated the chances of bringing IBD into your collection are practically nill. A couple of months quarantine is probably adequate. The chances of any boid that you see for sale having IBD are very very small. The more other snakes that a snake has been exposed to and the more time it may have spent in a facility with mites the greater the chance that it could have IBD. Dirty dealer facilities are probably the biggest cause for the spread of IBD. Do you have other boids in your collection? If you have a collection with no boids there is practically no reason to worry about IBD. Even If you have a collection with no boids you should still keep any new aquisition quarantined for a couple months. In summary, smart buying, cleanliness, reasoable quarantine and proper husbandry are the keys to keeping a healthy collection of snakes.
