Red Western Hognose?

Burmaboy Sep 29, 2006 07:33 PM

I am about to buy a western hognose, and the one I am looking at is being sold as "red".
Is there such a thing? And if so can someone post pics?
Also...what is the market price for a "red" western hognose? This particular one is selling for $170.00
Just curious, as I don't want to part with more money than need be. I figure it's best to ask the questions before purchasing.

Thanks in advance
Bob

Price depends on size and sex. Here's a pic of one of my reds she's a juvi.

It depends on the quality, age, sex, etc. There are many post for reds that are not reds. This has come up many times in this forum. Not all reds are created equal, some are better than others and some develop better color as they mature. If I were buying through the classifieds I would want to see pics of the parents. Unless the pics are really good, properly exposed and color balanced, I would also want a satisfaction guarantee. Upon arrival if they are not what they were advertised to be, they would go back.
I have had a very nice red female in the past. Nice, not A+ grade but nice. Certainly good enough to start a red project. I sold her but really like hogs. So at the recent NARBC in Anaheim I bought 1.4 of the best reds I have ever seen in person. No pics yet but in a couple of days I'll post some pics.

Most red hogs that I see advertised or posted I would consider reddish-brown. There are some real bright red western hogs, but they are not very common.

Beware digital photos of hogs that don't have some sort of color reference. Anyone can take a photo of an average reddish brown hog and up the red channel or just increase the saturation to make it into a screamer. Also, many digital cameras oversaturate the red channel.

Here's one of the reddest I have ever seen in person (there are a few redder in captivity). I have checked this image against the original and it is correct for color.

Just for fun, I thought I would show you how easy it is to increase the red (and price) of a hog. This is a kennerlyi from the Davis Mts. with a $200 price tag...

and another with a $50 price tag.

The second picture is what it really looked like!

There are nice red hogs, but always see before you buy and make sure you can trust the photos.
