My Pet Peeve

sedated Sep 30, 2006 03:39 AM

So here is the story of Peeve my prehensile tailed skink and her recovery process over the past few months. She was sent to a pet store by an importer up here in Canada that provides many of our pet store with their reptiles. Sadly she arrived in the most appauling condition (first few pictures).

Anyways, here's what she looked like when she first arrived (photos courtesy of the person who initially cared for her)

She was severly underweight, had several old sheds stuck to her, cigarette burns, parasites, respritory problems, bacterial infections and wasn't eating. A friend of mine at the store didn't want her to go to someone who wouldn't know what they were doing and neglect giving her the care she was in need of, so she called me and "convinced" me to take her home. I had to make an appointment with the vet as soon as I got her home, in which he prescribed yet another antibiotic for her (she had already been on several medications while at the store). She finished the medication and as was a completly different lizard afterwards. Three months and several hundred dollars in vet bills later this is what she looked like this .......

Her nose is now completely healed, she's parasite and infection free and looking wonderful. She's also turned into quite the piggy, she'll gladly inhale a bowl of salad a day. Her favorites are bananas... if she see's a banana she'll chase you down for a bite...she has gained more than 100g in weight and is looking wonderful.

Here she is today...

(she loves swinging from the dowels in her tank)

she's about to shed so the pics don't do her amazing colour any justice... oh how I've fallen for her

Great job.

I remember when I used to see these guys imported fairly regularly. And always in the most horrible shape. They really are delicate and shy lizards despite their appearance and powerful claws. As Im sure you know they are extremely strong, even when they are weak.

I rescued one about 10 years ago and she was gravid. She actually gave birth to a live baby. I did my best with her but she passed away shortly after giving birth. The little guy seemed fine and was eating and growing. I took extra special care of him. He survived and seemed to be doing very well, eating and growing, then one morning he suddenly died. I have no idea why as he showed absolutely no outward signs of a problem. He ate heartily the day before he went. I suppose it was something genetic and he was doomed from birth. I admit I miss the little guy

She's wonderful and despite seeming to have had a rough time is doing great and luckily she isn't shy at all. She loves the attention and will gladly climb up onto your arm if you put it in the tank. In fact once she sees you come into the room she's at the glass scratching to get out, and as for them being nocternal, I find her to be just as active and enjoyable to watch during the day... I'd be so upset if I were to wake up one morning to her passing I would love more of them and as of recently I've seen quite a few young ones in the pet stores. I just can't bring myself to spend $500 on a lizard where I have no idea where it comes from.

Here's a few more pics of her cause I was quite bored today.

First I made her salad for the week (I add fresh fruit daily)

Put it in her tank and she makes her way down

Down she goes into her dish

I don't think she liked the camera being so close

Look at the claws on her... so glad she's friendly

And for those of you that care to see her "get that camera the heck out of my face" face, feel free to watch the action packed video !!!!!!!!!!

You did a great job with that skink. Despite her annoyance at you being too camera happy, I am sure she loves her new 'mom' (or 'dad' if that is the case). These are very interesting lizards and knowing most are imported into Canada, I am deffinitely going to be making sure I get a captive bred, should I ever decide to add one of these skinks to my growing zoo.

Very nice pics! I just recently got a PTS, and even though it is a little hissy in the cage, is fine once it's out. Have you tried putting live Pothos in the cage? They love it and it is native to their homeland. Congrats on the rehab.
Here is a pic of my new skink, Berman, in her Pothos.
