Southern Pines?

Mrez Sep 30, 2006 07:48 AM

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to thank you all for your help in the perfect pits post a week or two ago. I am getting closer and closer to making a final descision and wanted some more opinions..
Isis Reptiles have some lovely southern pines for sale. As much as I'd prefer a northern pine (the one in the pic from Ocean Co. below is gorgeous, and from my home town area to boot)the Northerns are still illegal and I don;t want to deal with any issues on that end. How are the Southern Pines in terms of temperment? And size? Are Southerns considered the same as florida pines?
I'm also still eyeballing Deppi Jani, and black pines, but the black pine would have to be screaming jet black, and maybe cape gophers, or albino cape gopher if I could find one.

M,
Southerns are awesome.

I was in the same boat as you- wanted a northern really bad, but a breeder here sold me on a southern, and I couldn't have been happier.

The southerns don't get as long as the notherns, but I think they are heavier bodied.

They are known to be the loudest hissers of all the pits, but mostly show. My female '05 is a sweetheart- never hissed, but on occasion will rattle her tail- she's GREAT with my kids!

I got mine from Nokturnel Tom- I know he's got a clutch of eggs that's due to hatch any day now... his snakes are top notch, and he's a pleasure to buy from!

The southern pines that I have are all heavy bodied indeed. The northerns are somewhat leaner than the southerns and yes, they do hiss louder than northerns. Their temperment is awesome. I have a large female that is super gentle and that is what the kids hold when doing a show and tell. Southern are the same as Florida pines and they come in many varieties (dark, light, leucistic, patternless, albino, etc...). Here is a pic of a normal female southern.

Very nice southern pine, big looking to. I think I am leaning towards a blue eyed luecisitic though. The lavanders also look really sharp. To many choices and not enough space. I just don;t want to end up with another Pit that tries to take my face off.

Very nice looking, and I'd definitly be intrested, but what kind of temperments do the albino capes have? and what about size?

Cape gophers are great, I produced my first clutch of het albinos this year from my male albino with a normal female. They are beautiful snakes, and with the albino gene in the picture, they are a great snake to work with.

fla pines are the coolest and "northern fla" pines have black coloration on their dorsum and spots on their heads where "southern fla" pines have clean whithheads. the pic scott posted is of a northern panhandle pine. heres a pair of lavender phase pines that hatched last year from wild cought female, found in kissimee fla.

Those are very attractive animals! I think you have the normal color phase of the southern pine down to a science. Keep up the good work. Kevin
