Wild Caught Albino Yellow Rat:

Oxyrhopus Sep 30, 2006 04:19 PM

This male was found by a friend just south of Lake Okeechobee. It's just about 3 foot however lacks dark striping but does have a white faded stripe connecting the blotches. I would appreciate any comments on the specimen.

I would assume an escapee but definitely one beautiful snake.
Love everything about it.
It definitely fed well while "on-the-run"
I think that is the first albino yellow I have seen.
How's its temperament?

I gotta go with Jimmy on this one. Its hard to believe an albino gould survive 3 months in the wild, let alone achieve 3 ft.

It is a strinkingly beautiful animal.

Is there a way to tell by scale count? It kinda screams corn/rat backbreeding hyrid to me.It is very uniqe in the colour dept.

Oh, I am most certain its a wild caught yellow rat, not a cross nor an escaped pet or release. It was found very far from any human habitation. I have examined it in detail with a magnifiging glass side by side with a wild caught normal yellow from the same area, and it looks in every way just like the normal except for the color differences. And unless someone is releasing albino yellow rats in the glades, I would think finding a release would be as difficult as lucky as it was to find the albino.

However the case, a few albino yellows have turned up in the past in Florida.

And not too far from this one, a scaleless yellow rat was found.

And I am not sure this snake is a true "albino" so to speak. I think it is a "T" Positive Albino. I need to get a book of sorts and figure it out I suppose.

Given where you found it is indeed likely to be a wild mutation. That is one lucky find, especially considering how long it had to survive in the wild. A fossorial/nocturnal habit would help it avoid predation and harmful direct sunlight as a neonate and subadult. The diurnal/arboreal habit of adult Yellows would not have boded well for this guy.

That is one fantastic looking snake, easily as stunning as the best Corn morphs. The blue iris makes me wonder if it is perhaps an ultra hypo. The combination of white, pink, lavender, and yellow is totally psychedelic!

Put me down for 1.2!

Congrats!

Both Tim Egan's and Don Long's albino subocs they caught were over 2 feet long if I remember correctly. I also heard at least one of the two albino Whitewater Rosies was and adult.

I dont know Jimmy, In My own opinion I believe it could very well be a wild strain of albino running around in Florida..Instead of just some escapee..I mean heck, Most of our corn morphs started in Florida back in the day lol..I have some pics somewhere of a ringneck that was found here in my county somewhere, that one of my dads friend caught and killed ! awesome snake, an adult at that..I know that wasnt an escapee LOL.

Of course, as we know there are albino specimens found in the wild but the odds truly do go against it.
Yes, it is possible and maybe even probable with the location but it would obviously be a rarity to say the least.
BUT if this snake is ever bred I would seriously like to get a pair of them.
Beautiful.

i believe the majority of wild-caught albino adults were either fossorial or a nocturnally active animal....here we have a diurnal animal that has survived all of the environment's pitfalls to make it to adulthood...good for him....however i do question the lack of melanin, i think that exporsure to the natural uv light would stimulate some melanin production....but then what do i know?????.....yo...aaron call me

Nice looking animal. The red blotchs are similar to the blotches that my male albino yellow rat has. It will be interesting how much your snake yellows up in the next year or so.

Isn't someone going to bring up the large numbers of captive snakes that supposedly got out in Florida/Louisiana/the surrounding areas as a result of Katrina? I believe someone on the corn forum found an ultramel way out in the middle of nowhere, too.

Not just Katrina, but Charlie before her! And don't forget Andrew - he released a lot of captives as well in the Miami area.

I figure in 50 years Florida is gonna be Mecca for all kinds of exotics. Not that it isn't already.
