New North American Record???

Rivets55 Sep 30, 2006 07:32 PM

A picture has been posted on the Pine/Bull/Gopher forum of a WC Bullsnake said to be 122 inches long.

A 122 inch WC Bullsnake would exceed the standing North American WC record of 103 1/2 inches (held by the Eastern Indigo) by an extraordinary 17.9%.

Any thoughts?

john, one slight clarification however.....that bull was caught in 01 & the pic was taken in 06. i believe the records given are just of wc animals. still, it is one big snake, imagine having to clean his cage when he's not in the mood to be disturbed!

>>john, one slight clarification however.....that bull was caught in 01 & the pic was taken in 06.

Yes, I noted that. Hence the question (unanswered as of yet): How long was the snake whan captured? The corallary being: What documentation exists?

>>>i believe the records given are just of wc animals.

I think thats true - it seems odd that this snake was not immediately brought foward and the record claimed. One theory would be that it was not a record when captured, i.e., it was less than 102 inches. It then follows that about a 20% increase is needed to reach 122 inches.

For the sake of conjecture, say the snake was right at 102 inches, and is now 122. This 19.6% increase over the record lenght for WC Bullsnakes is incredible. Could an already mature adult increase its lenght by more than 20 % in 6 years?

>>>still, it is one big snake, imagine having to clean his cage when he's not in the mood to be disturbed!

You got that right! Think of the vast quantities of poop!

Dan is right, size records only apply to wild caught animals, at least in the literature. But bragging right are bragging rights I guess.

Does anyone know who currently has the largest captive indigo ? If there's a huge male out there, paired up to a big female, the offspring might pass that bull....

i found an texas indigo in frio county on a ranch we used to have that was 9' 2" i had a pic with a tape measure down the side of it
but during operation rock cut i burned the pic to be safe, but i did have 2 witnesses to the size, this would have been the new state record
i found the snake back in 1994 on the round on our ranch

Back in the late 60's I found a nearly seven foot Sonoran Gopher Snake on the Fort Mcdowell Indian reservation, outside of Phoenix. It looked like a monster in the headlights. I can not imagine finding a nine foot serpent.

Rivets55 Oct 08, 2006 02:21 AM

A revised lenght has been posted for the enormous captive Bullsnake - 9 ft 2 in, or 112 inches.

This is still a significantly larger than the WC record, and is a full foot longer than the WC record Bull.
