What is the best substrate for a western hognose? The pet shop I am considering buying one from is keeping them on sand.
I have read too many conflicting ideas on substrate.
What is best?

I just switched to Aspen beeding, and can only recommend that.

I am probably going to use cypress mulch, but as I mentioned in my earlier post, the pet shop had this animal on sand.
I understand hognose snakes love to burrow and hunt. So I figure
cypress should do the job.
I use #1 grade aspen, it seems to be more absorbant and holds tunnels better than cypress. It is also not dusty like cypress.

I use coconut husk bedding. Mine's not this brand but here's an example:

It's good stuff. It's absorbant and my hog loves burrowing in it. Definitely don't use sand. I think my snake wouldn't be a very happy snake if she had nowhere to burrow.
...are what the breeder I got my '05 male western from, and I've not had any trouble w/ them. It's really tiny aspen chips. Holds up well for tunnels too.
