Tank set up

dx371 Sep 30, 2006 09:33 PM

I have had a whites tree frog for about 6 years now but I kinda want to change the tank around a bit. I wanna maybe add some live plants or something...its a 20 gallon high he has been doing great for 6 years but I want to change it around he has a lot of fake plants, dirt I bought at the pet store...cant remeber the name of it, a water dish so deep enough for him and a background...any ideas? he can claim on the fake plants but Im thinking maybe a few more climbing spots for him would be nice, so any ideas on plants and what not?

I'll give my two cents and I doubt it will be popular. Take it with a grain of salt.

It is my opinion that if you have had an animal for a while, and six years qualifies as "a while", then you are doing something right and I wouldnt screw around two much with success. I dont like live plants in enclosures because I feel they arent worth the effort. Many of them are treated with pesticides and even if they arent they seem to attract bugs, or actually carry eggs/larvae with them. They also generally do not do very well and then you have dying, rotting plants. Or maybe I just have a black thumb when it comes to gardening. And Im lazy, lol.

I like to use artifical plants as they are trouble free and the animals could care less. I highly doubt they know the difference.

However if you just want to change the tank around without really effecting your husbandry thats fine. You could always get some new, artificial plants just for a change of pace.

What I like to use with my dumpys is cork bark tubes. They love these and I like how they look. The dumpys can perch on top of the tubes and they also can go inside them and high. Mine like to hang out right at the mouth of the opening. I put them at an angle so they can enter the tube from the bottom if they wish and climb up inside. I also have one running across the back of the enclosure mounted about 2/3 of the way up with branches leading up to it which they use as ladders. They seem to like it. Just a thought.

I havent changed anything in a while. Like you I've had some of my dumpys a long time. One of them for over 10 years. Im paranoid to change things around too much. I really need to take a pic of that one. He's the bluest dumpy Ive ever seen live. Ive seen blue ones in pictures but havent seen one as blue as he is in person.

Ok thanks, I was thinking that changing it could be a bad idea...thanks for the input.

i would put some live plants in there. my whites seem to wreck everything but a large birds nest fern and a few vines. branches going across and diagonally work well too. i use grapevine, corc, and regular driftwood, they seem to prefer something that isn't too wide though, like a thick branch. good luck and email me if you have any more questions at otis07_@hotmail.com
