Blood-Phase Peru redtails? PHOTOS....

RioBravoReptiles Oct 01, 2006 07:53 AM

Will they prove out? What do you think?
.
This season I got a very healthy litter of 26 babies, zero slugs or other problems, from a pair of Peru BCC redtail boas. This was not unusual by itself! Except that approximately 25% came out with the visible attributes of Blood Boas. Here's a photo of the birth....
.

.
.. at first I was very interested in these because I believed they would develop into Black redtails (maybe they will?) but after looking at them more closely and showing the photos around to get opinions it seems they may well be F1 BCC Blood boas. Here's a closer look...
.

.
..... and a post-shed photo of that one, note the nearly black eyes..
.

.
Whatever they are they are developing into very beautiful boas! This image shows how that one looks now..
.

.
.. and still the black 'doll's' eyes..
.

.
Interesting stuff! Here's some photos of the parents..
.
Male..
.

.
Female..
.

.
Maternal grandfather or father of the female..
.

.
Thanks for looking through all this!

WOW, Gus ... something new is definitely going on here ... and you just gotta love it! The RED color is one thing, but those BLACK eyes might be the key.

Congrats ... Bill

Hey Gus,

Good stuff !! the black eyes are one of the key markers for the Blood boa mutation ... whatever they turn out to be, those are very interesting and nice looking snakes ... please post more photos as they mature.

FYI - by way of comparison, here is a photo of a Blood boa clutch (F2 parents, F3 babies - 100% pure original line/ El Salvador BCI), pre shed.

cheers, John

show that we saw. I hope you will see this project through a few generations. While they don't have the typical blood look, they are sooooo unique!

Hey thanks!
.
The evidence so far suggests this is the same gene (or something very similar) as is seen in the CA Blood boas. I would guess it looks to be differently expressed because of the great differences in color and tone of the Peru stock versus the imperator Blood boa stock.
.
Anyway, they are interesting and beautiful.

Very interesting little guys. I like how they are progressing, and I love boas with solid color eyes, they just stand out so much. Bloods, Leopards, and some Type II Anerys have black/solid color eyes, and all are genetic mutations. So maybe there is something going on there.

Gus are you going to start morph breeding BCC?

I also have a normal 66% possible het Leopard with solid color eyes, it may be due to the Leopard influence, or it may be something else. Only time will tell.

Do you plan on working with these Peruvians to see if they are genetic? It will be a long road, but it will be interesting.

Ha!
.
Well, I didn't plan on producing something like a Morph from my BCC breedings but I'm sure going to see where this gift they gave me goes..
.
Thanks.
