Rio Grande Leopard Frog close to Phoenix?

AzJeeper Aug 05, 2003 10:11 PM

Anyone know where I can find one of these frogs somewhat close to Phoenix?

From what I understand, they are rapidly displacing our native sub-species so I hope no one would have a problem pointing me in the proper direction.

"Similarly, the accidentally introduced and rapidly spreading Rio Grande leopard frog (Rana berlandieri) in Arizona (Platz et al. 1990) also evolved with bullfrogs. In fact, this leopard frog is spreading into areas where the endemic Yavapai leopard frog (R. yavapaiensis) has been extirpated, probably by introduced predators as well as habitat alteration (Vitt and Ohmart 1978; Jennings and Hayes 1994)."

Is this the beast to which you refer? I've seen them in some pretty arid locations. Unfortunately all I can offer is they are all over South Texas and along the waterways in West Texas (Rio Grande and the ajoining irrigation canals).

Yep that's him. From what I understand, they've moved in to Arizona's main waterways (Salt, Gila).

Just looking for a specific area someone might have seen one in Az.
