FED-EX AND SHIPPING

gtk4158a Oct 01, 2006 10:13 AM

oK gang, i am not trying to " ruffle feathers" but i see more and more people complaining about bad service.I have been involved with shipping for 20 years and i would like to say that we have used every carrier out there at least once. For the most FED-EX is a quality service but even the best have a "bad day" on ocasion. First of all breeders need convience and service and fed -ex offers services that breeders need and want.I cannot , for the life of me, understand why people pay big bucks for animals and then try to skimp on the shipping.Breeders have got to understand that someone like me whom has a small collection, get "put off" from the hobby with just one "bad" experience. I always ask if A breeder ships "delta dash" because of several good reasons.
1. limited stops and transfers, i.e. less likley to "misplace" our package
2.they are easily tracked on the internet or a phone call
3.they have done it for a long time
4.less need for heat or cold packs because packages dont sit overnight in a warehouse or "hub" or in a truck
5.less time in transit equals less chance of somebody screwing up and dropping or crushing our herps
I am sure i might of missed some of the plus's but if you can , pay the extra money and shipp" delta dash"

Also a thought about fedx most people dont know..If you aRE A high volume shipper with fedx you can get a fed -ex "maxi-ship"
system which is directly tied into the fed-x system. What does that do for you? If you shipp enough you can actually "set" the prices and make good money from just the "shipping and Handleing" charges., that a breeder might charge. You ask how much? where i work we normally charge 20% over fed-exs List rates and beleve me in the course of a year that is a lot of "bank"!!!
NO i am not an employee of fed-ex or a agent nor do i work for u.p.s. or delta airlines.I aint in it for nothing other then getting my Animals to me SAFE, SOUND AND WARM and ALIVE!!! iF MORE OF US complained to breeders about why they dont use delta dash maybe they would come around and do it.Some breeders do use "delta dash" and yes it does cost twice as much as fed-ex but hey, while fed-ex does a great job they will, do , and will continue to lose our herps although it is uncommon.next year i think that after selecting a breeder and doing my reasearch on them the best i can , the difining factor between one breeder or the other will be "do you use delta dash" if one does and the other does not then i will always go with the guy whom says" i do"
Mr. Breeder--i understand you point of view, delta dash requires you to start an account, you have to check airline schedules and make arrangements with the customer so the customer can pick up his herps.Yes it is more labor intensive, check flight schedules, call customers, etc etc but it is what I NEED, and sorry if you are inconvienced but hey, you want my money or not ? lets all support each other in this and not let a bad shipping experiance cloud our hobby.Lord knows, with a lot of peoples perceptions skewed about herps in general, lets try to keep all the new and sometimes older hobbists in the fold if we can and make that atempt, Please mr. breeder man? sorry if i stepped on your foot but sometimes to get that women to "dance right" we gotta step on their foot a time or two.LOL thanks gang god bless and good herping............

Does FedEX "knowingly" ship herps? DHL did, and now they no longer ship animals. I have to pick up a package back from them tomorrow and am considering FedEX.

That my friend is a very good question and i will have to research that because I just recieved a fed x overnight from florida and it was in a plain box marked "perishable" and that was it as fAR as any kind of notice that an animal was inside. And yes i was nervous about shipping 525.00 bucks worth of honduran "Snow" babies via fed x...They arrived at 9:30 or their abouts and the driver was oblivious to what was inside.Man breeders really need to use delta dash in my opinion...

For the most part Delta Dash is at the top of the list for shipping, but there are some other things to consider.

This past year Delta reorganized and either dicontinued service to some cities or replaced their regular Delta flights with "Delta Connection" flights. I am in Wyoming and my nearest "regular" Delta service is 500 miles away in another state. We have local "Delta Connection" flights but even though "Delta Connection" flies under Delta's colors and name, they are operated by smaller independent carriers, and now some of those independent carriers apparently do not have the same policies and regs concerning the shipping of animals and they do not necessarily honor Delta's policies. Most of the "Delta Connection" flights in this part of the country are operated by Great Lakes Airlines and they have apparently decided not to accept ANY animals on their flights. They still provide Delta Dash service but they won't accept animals. So if you ship animals by Delta Dash and any part of that flight is on a "Delta Connection" plane your shipment might run into problems depending on who the company is that operates the Delta Connection flight.

I don't know how widespread this problem is but it does pose shipping problems up in this part of the country.

Called Delta Dash some time ago and the following was related to me:

1- If you're not a "certified shipper" your pkg. is limited to one pound.

2- To be certified, you must fill out some paper work, and have your home, premises, or whatever, inspected by the Delta folks to get certified as a breeder, dealer, and be licensed for ????

I only spoke to this delta person at LaGuardia airport one time, and once was enough to go back to whatever works best for me.

Living in NYC is aggravating enough without adding more aggravation.

What kind of requirements does FED-EX have?

_snake_charmer_ Nov 28, 2006 08:51 PM

try talking to someone else.. i had the same prob when i talked to someone from delta.. and then when they finally transfered me the fellow was able to help me without an account as long as the snakes are nonvenomous.

...both have been good for me so far. Of course there are chances of problems with ANY shipper bit these two will ship your animals (snakes in my case) LEGALLY when you follow their terms.
In the case of Delta, it took less than 3 weeks for my certification, and with FedEx, two.
To follow to the letter of the FedEx agreement you are to ship business to business only.
Delta is more expensive but if you have a pkg. that is "oversized" it will cost you more with FedEx too. Delta's first rate change is at 70 lbs. I believe...

OK I have a question. If your not a business (yet) and you want to ship FedEx to someone that just wants one or 2 snakes for their hobby FedEx won't ship right? We work with both lizards and snakes and I just shipped DHL and the lady ask what was in the box. I told her a lizard and she said that was fine but if it was a snake we couldn't ship, that was DHL. She then said that FedEx would but you have to be registered to ship animals and that it would have to go from business to business. I called FedEx and the lady I talked to refered me to IPATA some animal group that deals with proper shipping of animals. So I'm still confused LOL. I've been in the hobby and shipping for years. I just started shipping again in the last few months after a few year break (sold animals at shows). Now we have snakes that are ready to be sold so how do we do it? I would like to be as leagal as possible. I've always had good luck with animals delivered FedEx, the DHL package we just shipped was late and the guy had to take off work to receive it. I did get a refund for shipping, they were cool about that. I would ship Delta but it's like a 4 hour round trip to the nearest major airport. ANY coments would be great, I know this got long LOL.

Can you insure a live animal against loss with FedEx as you can with Delta Dash?

I think not. I'll have to reread my terms but I'm pretty sure you waive any claims against them.
