sexual dimorphism in rusty black rats?

redmoon Oct 01, 2006 04:58 PM

I'm going to pick up a rusty next weekend, and I'm unsure as of what sex to get. Right now, I have a female brindle, and a male albino. If I get a female, that will add one more clutch to the incubator for the year, which would be nice. I can never get enough babies crawling around!
If I get a male, I would then only be able to breed one male with my female, and would have a snake that is outside of the circle for a while.

But, my real question is-
Is there any sexual dimorphism between rusties? I know that there's a big difference in brindles, and if I were only going to have one brindle, I'd rather have a male. I know, I have a female, but she was given to me, so it's hard to complain. With the rusties, I think I'd rather have a pretty display animal than another breeder.

There isn't any of that documented in this morph. You will be happy with whichever sex you choose. However, some people seem to think that the parents will help to determine what the babies will look like in this phase. That is debatable, but it can't hurt to see the parents first. Good luck in your acquisition. Just curious, where do you plan to get one this weekend?

I'm hoping to get it from Floyd Presley. He'll be at the Pittsburgh show Sunday, and I've been waiting over a year to get one! By the time I decided I wanted one last year, he was sold out. I'm really hoping he'll have one left. At that, I think I'm going to aim for a female, if he has them.
Floyd's adults are gorgeous. I've seen one, and seen tons of babies, and they're very nice. They have really patchy patterns, almost like brindles, and nice purple colors.
