Papuans

JFM Oct 01, 2006 07:03 PM

Anyone here keep papuans? I acquired an 8-9 ft male and a6-7 ft female back in the spring. I have only talked to one person who has bred them this year and the clutch hatched with popeyes. Anyway, anyone that has been successful with them, I would be most appreciative. By the way, my pair is as sweet as can be. A little huffing, but I think that is normal for these. I trust them completely. Thank you.

Yup,
I have a pair also. My female is 8', and I have raised her from a baby. My male is about 3.5' and have been raising him from a baby also. I think I know who you are talking about with the bug eyed babies. They are not the only one that has happened to. A few years back the same thing happened to another large breeder, and no one knows why. I have been on a waiting lists for over 8 years for a CBB female with no luck.
I have no idea what the problem is, but it definately sucks that not enough people are working with this wonderful python, or so many others for that matter, I guess because they are not 10k snakes like every one seems to want now, lol.
I figure in two years I will try mine to see if they will breed. I do not think they have to be as big as most people think to breed either. I know of some one who breed Olives last year at 9', and produced 21 good eggs. Meanwhile you have other people saying they have to be 15' or larger to breed, but these people have no breeding success from these large animals. Who knows, but they are cool critters, and the huffing and puffing is normal, almost like they are trying to communicate with you. Good luck with your pair.

Both my male and female are 12'. Male is 22lbs, female is 36lbs. No luck last year, will try again this year. Once you get them out of the cage they're ok, but they will strike (not hard) on occasions until they're out. Huffy? Sure I think humidity and sprinkling my have more to do then temp or photoperiod, but that's just a guess.

Im still trying. My female that laid eggs once and ovulated twice, died over a year ago after her second ovulation, along with the male, in an unfortunate accident. Now i have been given another adult male, and my other, last remaining female is developing follicles right now, but i have not actually witnessed copulation from this new male. Hopefully, in a few weeks ill have a better assesment of whats going on.

I did notice my female on her back the other day just before shedding... Maybe I should put them together...
