Breeding P. flavirufa???

Colubridae Oct 01, 2006 09:43 PM

Hi Folks,

Just wondering if anyone can give some solid info on breeding protocol for Pseudelaphe flavirufa?

Do you brumate them, or "cycle" them?

Thank you for any advice...

S.S.

I've had success with them producing the last couple years after a 2.5 to 3 month brumation at 55-60 degrees. After coming out of brumation, warming up and feeding, I put them together after the females first post brumation shed. Starting 4 or 5 days after her first shed I put them together for 24 to 48 hours, seperate them for 4 or 5 days and repeat this 4 to 5 times or until she appears gravid. They lay VERY large eggs and small number clutches. Hope this helps and good luck. Randy W.

Thank you, Randy.

So, basically regular colubrid breeding parameters.

I had tried cycling them, two seasons in a row, as they are kept in the same room as my boas. My female would ovulate and produce eggs, but my male had no interest in her whatsoever. I had three (or was it four?) slugs from her the first season, and I figured that perhaps my male was too young. The second time around, the same thing happened except I got five slugs.

It would seem as though I'm just not gettin' 'em cold enough for the male to kick into "sex mode"...

I was worried about getting them too cold and having problems, seeing as they are so darned difficult to find here in Canada, believe it or not.
I actually may have a chance at being first to produce 'em up here...?

We'll see what happens this season.

Thanks.

It is true that males can have trouble with sperm production without proper brumation. If you get him down cold enough and she still slugs, it might be the male. I wouldn't think there would be a lot of success with cycling with boas.

Good luck!

Randy, great photo.

Sounds like a GPR clutch. Any chance you measured the egg length/width?

Those are great snakes and look forward to getting back into them in a few years.

I never measured them but they had to be at least 3 inches long. RW

Dang, that's huge. How do those females manage delivering such a large egg?

I have wondered that myself. It's gotta hurt. Luckily for them the eggs are somewhat slim like with bimacs or situla. Randy

Yep!

That's a cool looking female bimac. Nice pic and clutch of eggs. Thanks...Terry
