I need help with a sick baby

onthefly Oct 01, 2006 11:25 PM

I went to the pet store where I found the sick male Collared lizad and found that they had a C.B. little baby Collared lizard that was skin and bones and could bearly hold its head up, I talked the guy in to letting me have it if I bought some light bulbs and things, so I rescued the little guy, now what??????? I put him in a tank by himself wih a new uvb bulb and basking bulb, I pulled the head and leggs off two md. crickets and forced him to eat with cal. powder and a few drops of water, I'm going to leave the lights on for the night to keep it warm in the tank at night, he was cold when I got it, I hope some heat, food and somr water will help, it may be to late and he/she could be shuting down, it's not very active

I'm new to this kind of thing with collareds but I'd definitely make sure he is well hydrated, with other species I have always used a dripper and bathed in very shallow warm water to help them take in moisture without stressing too much by forcing the mouth open unnecessarily. This may not be avoidable with feeding....Wax Worms are more nutritious than crickets and contain more moisture too, plus are easier to digest.

I'm sure others will have more experience/ advice re collareds specifically, I may be wrong but sounds like a trip to the vet may be in order if he is not responsive.

Cecil, your doing the best thing, plenty of water, (drips with dropper) better yet childrens pedialyte, a few drops every few hours , to keep energy up. So you do not waste the bottle since ya have to use it in so many hours, fill up your ice trays with it, and then defrost a cube of pedialyte as needed.

Also small bugs would be awesome if he can manage to eat them, if not OR to help along , you can also use the dog food that Elan always talks about canned Hill's prescription A/D mixed with water and calcium, 1 /cc or 1 ml a day. OR baby food chicken and vegtables mixed with calcium , in a soupy consistancy so it's easy to get down, drip in the corner of mouth so you do not drown/choke him.
I have used both, and also prefer the dogfood (for short periods of time) to get them going.

And keep that heat up, I leave a light on at night for anyone who is very sick , they do better with the extra heat.

Let us know how he is.

And if you get him rehydrated and looking like he might live, take him to the vet soon to be treated for parasites.

Good luck,

This morning I tried to feed him a cut up wax worm and he wouldn't swallow so I gave him a few drops of water, came home after work and found the he didn't make it, he was just to week, I found him to late.

I'm sorry that you weren't able to save him. It's just heartbreaking when we find them too late to help.

At least you tried, its very sad to hear but you did what you could whilst he was still with us, I got a wobbly chin thinking about him racing around with Eve's lil fella, lol. Maybe Stevo is feeding him big fat roaches as we speak, lol
