LTR not eating...

gzyv15a Oct 02, 2006 04:16 PM

I have a three year old female Leucistic Texas Ratsnake a little over 4ft that hasn't eaten in a month. She did the same thing in the winter. She's not as active as normal, but she looks good. I'm just wondering could this be the weather change? Less sun in the daytime? Actually most of my snakes are less active. I can only assume it's due to the climate and light change? Your thoughts/comments are appreciated.

There seem to be more and more questions recently about animals going off of feed. I would say that it is getting to be that time of year. But if you are really worried you could take her to the vet for a check-up. If she hasn't eaten in a while you won't be able to get a fecal sample, but a good herp vet can still test for internal parasites by doing a cloacal flush. It's kinda like an enema

Many of our ratsnakes will start slowing down soon if they have not already. Even if kept at their usual temps, the shorter days do seem to influence their feeding. I have found that some of my snakes that seem uninterested in their regular meals this time of year will accept smaller prey items. Smaller meals, less often, seems to be the rule for several of my snakes from about this time until spring. If one goes a couple of months and won't eat at all I will often cool it down for a month or so. Don't worry. I just figure that even with my ratsnakes that I DON'T brumate, I will be spending less on chow this time of year and for the next few months. Duffy
