not sure if this has been asked but....

happycamper06 Oct 03, 2006 07:58 AM

what (if any) is the mating ritual of a boa? reason i ask is because my male seems to be constantly laying his tail over or next to the female and he keeps rubbing or sliding his tail along side her. Im wondering if this is some sort of routine action done by a male when courting the female to try to get her in the mood.the male seems to rather enlarged in the genital area and keeps pulsating or "dry humping" against the side of the female toward her genital area. so far ive not seen her give in but then again im not home all the time either. I know I could easily just lift the female's tail up so that the male can do his thing but i have a feeling thats just going to get me or the male bit so im just leaving it up to nature. anyway like i said, ive seen countless things on the basics of boa breeding but really nothing on the mating rituals or courtings of boas. is there an indepth article somewhere or can someone elaborate on the subject? would appreciate it.

I asked a similiar question earlier without any responses on the board. i'm also interested in knowing all that is courting. So far our male just seems to lay on the female all day long doin' nothin. lol.

seems like youve got another person wanting some answers on this topic. Any of you willing to step up and maybe post some reliable info?

Your guess was right, its a mating ritual. Basily what your male is doing isrubbing on the female and spurring her to try to set the mood. He should be following her around and like was mentioned just being on top of her. This kind of courting will happen before compulation and can last over night or weeks depending on the pair before actual mating occurs.

Thats about it, you shouldnt hear anything at all.

I had to rename the file so it didt get censored out, but i reposted it.

you'll see the male follow the female everywhere on top of her too, not just lie there! lol It might take a while for the female's eggs to mature if this is the first time breeding too, and courting could actually take up to a couple months before copulation actually happens.

Hey there. Sounds like your boy is doing what he is supposed to do. Hopefully you will start to see them "locking up" with their vents touching and his tail typically bent over at a pretty extreme angle. Sometimes the male will hold his tail up and wiggle it too. For more in depth information, read this from the Boaphile himself http://www.theboaphile.com/article.html. I bred my boas for the first time last season and this article was a real goldmine of good, reliable, useable information. good luck with your pairing!

that im doing things right. ok so far you all know whats going on. couple things i did recently based on some info ive gotten from the forums and websites. i turned off the heating pad and the temps in the tank are at 78F which reflects the temp of the room which is 78F as well. I have the a/c running to keep the temps down as i have read that females tend to be more receptive to breeding attempts by the male during this temp range. i have also been perodically misting the female as ive read this helps stimulate the female. one other thing ive been wondering. if snakes are nocturnal will they only do their thing at night or will they or have they been known to breed during the day?

BillyBoy Oct 04, 2006 12:06 PM

Well, it doesn't look like you're doing anything wrong, so it's really up to the snakes to tell you if you're doing it right or not. Basically, keep them together until the male is showing no interest at all for at least a week. Then separate them for a week, and reintroduce them and see if he continues to ignore her. If so, then remove him for good and keep an eye out for the female to ovulate and then shed. Keep good records and have fun with it!

Good luck!
