Skin Problems

Can anyone identify this legion on my gtp's head. The breeder (Xtreme Reptiles) said it was probably because I've had him in an enclosure that's too small and he's rubbing his head on the top trying to get out. I had him in a 12'w x 12"h x 8"d rubbermaid-type container w/ translucent plastic, but have moved him to something a little bigger (a couple days ago). He's about 8mo-1yr old, and I got him at the Daytona Breeders' Expo. He shed about tthree weeks ago, and ate a f/t fuzzy about a week ago. The legion appeared about the time he shed, though I can't say exactly when.

Me too. Usually a rub won't show up after a shed, but will diminish in size if it was there before. I'd have a vet take a look at it. You might want to drop the humidity a bit also in the meantime.

I would agree with Shiloh and Meg. That animal is most likely and import and not captive bred. Whoever it was at Extreme told you your inclosure is too small is trying to pass this off as your fault. It could very well be too humid, but you enclosure size is fine. I keep animals from 1-2 years in tubs that measure 15"x10"x6". In my opinion they are the perfect size. Try lowering the humidity.

Went to the vet. It was diagnosed as a fungal infection just by shining a black light on it. Wish I knew I could do that a couple weeks ago. He prescribed Miconazole Nitrate, a topical antifungal, as well as Nystatin, an oral antifungal (in case the infection had moved into his GI tract). Unfortunately, the fecal showed high levels of parasites (hook & pinworms, as well as strongilates; I started deworming). I've asked for more info on strongilates in another thread, so if anyone has any, post there if you could. I'll keep this thread updated so that others can learn from this. He's one sick snake, but I'll get him through it.
