Inexpensive, a few years old and pretty basic Canon PowerShot A75, measly 3.2 mega pixels. Once I learned how to use it I discovered that a quality cheap camera can produce some pretty respectable pics.

Good luck with your search.

Thanks buddy, she is a beauty and I wish I could take credit for her. She's the offspring of a white leonis female.

Interesting story behind me having her, and the orange leonis male in the top pic. They were my two favorite animals from all of Dan's clutches in 2003. I was a little tight for money at the time, hesitated briefly with making the commitment for them and they both had just been sold when I went back for them. I wanted that pair in a major bad way. About one year later... I was browsing the classifieds and was shocked to see them both for sale by the same person. I snatched them up in a heartbeat and they've been terrific snakes from the day they arrived here.

More cheap Canon pics.....

it was meant to be then, but if you decide that it wasnt meant to be, you know who to call. are you planning on breeding her this year? if so, do you have a male picked out for her?

I do intend to get her started next spring, she's definitely ready. The two males below are likely candidates for her. I'd like her first clutches to be from the white male, being that her mother is a beautiful white leonis. If she isn't too picky about her mate, she also has a future date with a superb male belonging to a close friend that is equally nice and of a similar light pastel green color. And I just received an absolutely stunning F2 milksnake phase male from another good friend in Oregon, and a screamer yellow male from another good friend out east... I don't see any way around pairing her up with these two new males at some point if all goes well.

That white male would be an awesome mate for her, the light colors and the split banding would be perfect, hopefully a carbon copy of the both would pop out, gotta start saving up some loot here in VT!

What sort of budget do you have? DSLR or digital point-and-shoot? My initial foray into digital has been with a Sony F828 (a higher end point-and-shoot) after years of using Nikons for 35mm stuff. I can tell you that unless you intend to produce poster-size prints, you can do very well with modestly priced equipment. The camera is hardly the limiting factor for most herp shots--much more important is the person behind the lens. Good photography comes with practice and understanding how composition, lighting, and other elements affect the image. That said, Nikon, Sony, Canon, and Olympus, among others, have some very nice equipment. Try various cameras, in hand, to see which ones fit you, as they differ greatly in size, shape, feel. Good luck!

Examples from the 828...first two taken here at the ranch, third (a non-kingsnake!) in the field.

I perfer a point and shoot, with a good zoom, you can stand back 5ft and get close up pictures without scaring the snakes. I use a Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom, its a 4.0 Megapixel, 10X optical zoom, and 4 digital. They don't make that model any more, but similar ones. Sony has one out thats 12 optical and 4 digital that seems to be pretty good in the $300.00-$400.00 range. Check out my gallery on the site below, all pict. were taken with the Olympus C-750 Ultra zoom.

I use a konica minolta z6, it is pretty easy to operate and you can use it as a point in shoot or invest a little more into it and add certain lenses along with a larger flash.
My favorite feature is the super macro, it takes really nice close ups.

Well, I can say that an expensive camera is no better than a cheap one if you don't know how to use it.....
Since I'm not very good at it AND I'm cheap, I use a cheap p&s type Kodak. It's o.k. for me and easy to use in the field too. I still screw up as many pics as I take good ones. Thank goodness for digital, or I'd be outta luck and outta $$ getting all my bad pics developed at Wally World
