A very Sad day for reptiles..

melindas Oct 03, 2006 05:11 PM

I live in pa and this morning a very large store burned to the ground. In this store was a pet store. They had alot of reptiles, and they took very good care of them. I sold quite a few baby balls to them and never worried about thier care.( they just sold the last of mine last week) I just saw a news story and they were able to save all the animals but a lama and the reptiles.. I love furry animals but there seems to be little regard for reptiles.I know there were baby beardies and water dragons and geckos. In my area there is one other pet store and the conditions of thier reptiles are disgusting. I buy what i can just to get them out of thier otherwise you watch them slowly die.. Why is thier nothing to protect reptiles. There are hundreds that protect dogs cats so on. Nothing for these helpless creatures.. I needed to vent.. Im devastated over this knowing that they died in a fire it is a horrible way to go..Other than rescues is thier anyway to protect them?
Thanks Melinda

That is awful... Maybe if you know the owners, you can go and help rebuild in some way?

It's always sad to think that people consider reptiles to be secondary to mammals. They are living too!

Just the other day some "Animal Rights" jerks torched a petstore in Boston. They were able to save a few fish and some reptiles. Most died in the fire. They set the fire because they didn't like how the animals were kept/ didn't think anybody should have these as pets. I guess burning the place to the ground and killing innocent animals was better. Creeps.

Maybe we can start a petition on this site to send to the congressmen of every state to get some considerations for Reptile rights. David of DS Reptile Rescue , Removal & Rehabilitation

I think that is an excellant idea . I would love to help with something like that.. That is needed everywhere. Im sure that everyone knows of a place that should be closed down.. If anyone has any ideas on how ot start something i would like to be involved..

Well to be 100% honest if i had to choose between some birds, dogs, cats or rabbits and letting the reptiles die, I would've saved the mammalls. I would give priority to the animals I felt had a higher level of emotion and understanding.

Have you ever seen animals fleeing a forest fire? I have and they all flee with the same voracity and I think they all understand death and hot and I'm burning up!! please. Plus I have seen deer freeze up and just stand there until they were on fire and then run .

I'd grab the reptiles first, knowing that everyone else would be grabbing the birds and fuzzy things.

I like the snakes at my work more than the hamsters anyway - I know which one's more likely to bite me when I open that cage up, and it's not the one with scales!

Very sorry to hear that. It disgusts me that people discrimate against animal types. The herps deserve the same care and attention as any other animal. I don't think that I could have chossen to save the fluffys and not the herps. The mentality of some people really gets my back up, I've heard people say about animal testing that it's ok on rats as they are dirty and have scaly tails...But don't do it to the fluffy bunnie rabbits they're cute.. It's not ok on any animal. Sorry rant over ..

If anybody gets anything together about changing peoples views on herps this is one Welshman who will do what he can to help.

i live in miami and i want to go undercover and photograph the conditions ive seen reptiles in pet shops.( Not everyone is bad there is a chain of stores here that are specialty and they are superb) other than that its a shame. when i have time off ill show u pics of skinny and starved balls kept in beach sand-filled 10 gallons. iguanas in 10 gallons without water, lighting, ventilation. People who dont know jack about reptiles shouldnt sell them.

At a local store here I watched a baby bearded dragon go from a plump healthy looking dragon to skin hanging off it It took two months for the the thing to die and then... they kept the dead body in the tank with the lights on for two days. I wanted to but it biut they wanted 200 hundred for it, I got so upset that it was still in the tank with lights and dead , I got into a huge argument with the owners,I have known them for 15 years. But their husbandry for reptiles is disgusting. This was driving force i believe thier should be agancy that enforces and cks on retiles if they dont do the right thing then they need to be fined and shut down. They do it for cats and dogs and fish and birds.. Why not the reptiles.. I am going tommrow to my local representives office to find out where to start.. melinda
