29gal setup from earlier post PICS

icedearthgoddess Oct 03, 2006 07:20 PM

This is the setup that the two geckos will go in. The two hides are cramped, but we'll see how they like it. This should suffice for two right?

Please tell me that green carpeted bridge thing is secured somehow! Looks very much like a gecko could knock it down, resulting in injury, esp if another gecko was on top at the time!

Otherwise, looks pretty good to me.

Oh, yes it is secured... the ramp... which is now moved up onto the log, it is velcroed to the shelf. The shelf is glue along the legs to the floor and the back to the glass. I assure you, it is all very secure. thanks for the concern though!

Where is the humid hide? It is very important to have one.

I have found humid hide needs to be entirely based on the gecko's preference. No problems shedding with no desire to use a humid hide = no problem.

Since these are well established geckos just "moving in" together, (I think) I'm assuming neither one prefers a humid hide?

Agree, I find that most of my males do not use, nor need hides. Unless the females are gravid, there is no need if they do not prefer it.

You are completely wrong! Leos NEED humid hides. Does it take them losing a digit before you change your mind? It is beneficial to them shedding and gives them a place to dig / relieve stress.

Don't point fingers and tell people they are wrong unless it is true. I had humid hides for all my leos. NONE of them used it, except gravid females to lay thir eggs. They preferred to sit in the water dish. I tried several substrates to see if they like it, and still the same result. I removed them and now i mist the inside of the caves when they are ready to shed. NO ONE has lost a digit or even had one bad shed thank you very much. SO instead of saying we are all wrong, make sure you know the whole story. Thank you.

I inspect my geckos after each shed as a rule, I think that goes without saying whether you use a humid hide or not. For both the leos I have had under my care, neither has used a humid hide, both shed perfectly, on a regular schedule, and surprisingly quickly. All have perfect little claws and tails. Everyone's asleep or I'd offer a picture.

I always offer a humid hide in the beginning, but both leos have rejected its use. One gecko went so far as to move it out of his way until I removed it completely. I would think that level of anger is better directed at owners not feeding or not taking their pet to the vet than directed at this misunderstanding.

They do not NEED hides. I do encourage them to use one, but if they refuse, then why not. You are completely opionionated, and instead of calling us wrong, you should put "I think" in front of your sentences next time.

If by "NEED" you mean "never make any use of."

At least, that's been my experience. I've offered a humid hide, and it has been ignored. Mine seems to prefer playing in her water bowl, and for the record, in the time she's been with me (about a year now), she's not even had a single bit of left-over shed stuck to her, let alone on her toes. I make sure to thoroughly inspect her after every shed, and there's been no problem. That says to me that she's doing fine. Now, certainly, I don't doubt that there are geckos that use humid hides, and use them extensively, but to proclaim that all of them need them all of the time goes against a lot of evidence, and is therefore plainly ridiculous.
