Classroom presentation today..first one!

bthacker Oct 03, 2006 08:40 PM

I have been wanting to do a school presentation for awhile now and finally got my chance today. My mother-in-law is a principal at an independent studies school nearby.

I had 2 presentations, one for K2 and one for K3-6 this morning. I ended up bringing a variety of snakes including Boas. I had a great time and the kids seemed to as well. The teachers and parents were asking questions and getting involved too!

For the most part all the kids weren't afraid and some even had Ball Pythons as pets. Though, the coolest thing was getting the kids that didn't have any interest in holding them decide for themselves that they really did want to hold a snake!

Here are a couple pics. I should have some more pics soon but wanted to check with the parents first and get their permission before blasting the internet with their kids picture! If you could only see their smiling faces!!

I just wanted to say THANKS to Gray at Allboas.com for providing the information on his website in having a successful presentation!!

Mom-in-law helping and other teacher helping out.

Congrats on a successful presentation. It's nice to see a member of our hobby putting a good face forward with the public. It's also a lot of fun. Hopefully you'll get to go out again soon.

Always fun to do. When I go home for winter break, and when I get done in the spring I will be doing more presentations at the schools back home. My mom is a Spanish teacher at one of the elementary schools, so I did multiple presentations for each grade there before. That was 1.5 years ago, and my mom still has kids come into her class with a story they wanted her to pass on to me about an experience they had with a snake or other herp.
It's also great to do High School presentations, getting the big football players to run scared with the girls falling in love with them!
Last year I did a series of AP Bio classes, and finished the day with a entry level class for remedial students, the teacher approached me at the end and said that was the first time the class actually paid attention to a lecture.

I also have to give thanks to Gray for his advice!

That's awesome Chris. It was a blast today....I spotted a couple future enthusiasts and they reminded myself of me when I was a kid. Hopefully I will be able to do a few more. I definitely do not mind missing work to hang out with kids and snakes .
