Potty training?

peterinsano Oct 04, 2006 08:44 PM

I'm guessing this is just a coincidence, but it seems that for the last 5 or 6 times my guy has pooped, it has been right in his food plate, almost in the exact same spot.

Granted, I've been using a monster dixie plate in a relatively small sized cage, but I was just curious to hear of any similar experiences with reptiles.

Just thought it was pretty nifty.

I didn't mean it in a sense that it is inadequate for him- just in comparison to the size of the food dish.

The dimensions off the top of my head are 35"x20", I believe. And I don't think he's reached 10" yet.

well as long as it is in comparason with the food dish you always have to ask about these kinds of things

Some reptiles tend to have specific ways of determining where to poop. I've noticed many insectivorous lizards tend to find one corner that is out of the way and use that as a pooping area. I've felt that this means they like to go somewhere where they won't step through it. Other reptiles sometimes just poop where ever they happen to be in the enclosure at the time. This kind of makes me think that in the wild they cover so much ground that it doesn't really matter.

With herbivores (or animals primarily herbivorous), I have noticed that they often poop in or near the food dish. I've noticed this with my uromastyx and all three of my russian tortoises. From what I have researched (and some general common sense) it seems to me that if they happen upon a plant in the wild that is a really good food source, it would be good to fertilize the ground it is planted in.

For whatever reason, all our Uros crap in every square inch of floor space available to them, irregardless of sleeping, eating or basking quarters.

They are all individuals after all. I think it's funny that you ended up with having all your uros become indiscriminate poopers. I've noticed patterns for where/when my reptiles poop in all my reptiles. The uromastyx, russian tortoises, and leopard gecko at my place all seem to have specific areas that they generally use for defecation, and usually I can guess pretty easily when they are going to do it. My bearded dragon for the most part craps where ever he so pleases, and my ball python seems to go in one specific spot a few times, then he pics another spot, and so on.

It's kind of funny in a way. You really haven't noticed any patterns with any of your uros?

Try as I might, looking at our cages, I do see a pattern. Poop everywhere! And, in a couple cases, most especially in their hides... Toilet trained Uros? N'yet!!

My ornates just do it wherever and then walk or lay in it. Real nice. My malis go in the farthest corner away from their basking spots. The rest of the animals just go wherever.

Our little mali always goes in the corners of his enclosure. Unfortunately, one corner holds his food dish, and that's been hit a couple of times. Two are near his favorite warm side hide, and it invariably gets smeared all over the uro when he goes there. The fourth corner is where his uro-poo-colored hide is, and sometimes it sort of drips/rolls/oozes down the lumpy, uneven sides, sometimes it just lands on the floor of the enclosure, behind the hide, and I don't find it for days.

On further investigation, it seems our Sudans deposit more of their little treasures on the cool end of the cage.

LOL, i am so glad you are going back and starting at the poop in their cages

Vonnie, the search for poo has even replaced Reno 911 & My Name Is Earl. Thanks, Peterinsano!! You started all this...

Now everyone's looking for patterns in their uro's pooping. All I said was that I had noticed something funny.

One thing strange, notice how most of the mali keeps seem to say that their malis go in certain places, like my mali. Maybe it's something specific to that sub species.

Just all "tongue-in-cheek" humor!!
