green tree problems

herpluver Oct 04, 2006 11:35 PM

my brother inlaw have a number of green tree's. i just got a call that he lost another one and i'm looking for help on what is causing the deaths. they seem to be doing fine then one day they will be on the bottom of the tank, within days they are dead.

i have several snakes boarding at his house so i'm a bit worried about them. if anyone has any ideas or can lead me in a direction is would be most appriciated.

any question please ask and i will get more info

It is hard to know what the problem is without more info.

What is their housing like?

What are their feeding habits?

I also think you could learn a great deal by taking the snakes to a vet when they show signs of illness. You can also take the dead snakes (if they are still fresh) to a vet for a post mortum.

Best of luck,
Amanda

housing is a 2x2 cage with a heat panel, they seem to feed fine, death somes on very quickly, so quick to get in for a vet app.

he is have a neocropsy on this one, but i think this is the 3 or 4 one that has died this way.

i'm picking my 2 snakes up today (JCP)

Keep your JCP's quarantined from the rest of your collection as this sounds like it's a communal, contagious disease. I would be worried. Go with 6mths quarantine to be safe, as diseases like IBD are hard to diagnose until symptoms appear, and as you've mentioned, death is often the first symptom. A proper necropsy done by a herp minded pathologist will give you more answers and allow you to adjust your level of concern. It sounds like the snakes involved are not only personal pets, but rather expensive as well, so don't skimp out on any tests the vet discusses with you.

Good luck,
Ian

the 1.1 JCP are the only snakes i have left all others were sold, those 2 are pets and were sent to my sisters until i got a bigger house. the animal in question was sent off for neocrapsy on thursday. i'm hoping it was a husbandry issue, but at least with some answers i will know which derection to go in treatment

My only other suggestion is to keep the cage scrupulously clean, changing newsprint daily in case it's a direct live cycle parasite (but I'm still guessing it's not parasitic or husbandry related due to the quick onset of symptoms...worried about virus')
