I was going to go with the double one boaphile makes. I guess it's made to prevent what happened to you. How long did you have that unit for?

koky6869 Oct 05, 2006 12:18 PM

about a year

I have had my ranco for about 3 year and never had any problems....Makes one worry a bit.

They are designed to turn them selves off in the event of a short or malfunction.. I have never had one malfuntion on me yet..

Boaphile sells a double ranco where one thermostat backs up the other one. You might look at that, he invented it for just this problems. I am sorry to hear your babies regurged too. I hope everyone will be alright.

I have one of the ranco double units from boaphile. Kinda bulky and I don't like how the backup keeps shutting off the primary. Myabe it's just mine but the backup seems to always be sensing a higher temp than the primary. Maybe they're not real accurate? I stopped using it and have all my stuff on Helix DBS1000's. I like them, a bit pricey but if I remember correctly, less than the ranco double. They're supposed to have safety circuitry to ensure they don't stick. As with any stat, probe placement (securing the probe in place) is very important. I have over a dozen of the Helix units and never had any problems with them.
