i changed out to papertowels today. while i had johan out of the cage he pooped in the container i had him in. everything looked solid but there was a clear membrain around everything. is this normal?

Yup, if you let it dry, you should see it looks the same as you've seen before. I was surprised at first how wet these "desert" animals poo is.
Oh, one thing, we had similar hides to what you have in there next to the water bowl and moist hide - they molded on us. Mind you, we live near a creek and mold is very common, but I didn't expect it with all the heat in the enclosure. So, just FYI, keep a check on them when you change the PTs, hopefully you won't have our problem!
