Found a shed...

drapert Oct 06, 2006 07:59 AM

For a rather large eastern milk snake in my basement.

Some might recall that about 3 years ago, I found two baby eastern milks in my bedroom. These I set loose into the grass before frost hit so they could find a place to hibernate, as they were too small to successfully "feed".

However, this new one that has found it's way into my basement is quite a bit larger.

I have two cats, but they rarely venture into this part of the basement, and I believe she only comes out at night besides. I haven't seen any evidence of mice in the basement since I found the shed.

I'd say she's about 2 feet long, and maybe a full two inches around, though I've not actually seen her, just her shed. I think she might be hiding underneath the freezer. We will likely disturb her when we begin work on the basement. I've been considering catching some live mice from our barn to feed her once we find her--but was wondering if that might be possible--I don't want to have to set her loose now, as we've had a frost, and snow will likely come in a couple months. I thought if I could find her and keep her alive over the winter, I would set her loose in the spring.

Not sure why she keeps coming back around, although I've read that they tend to follow a trail every year to lay their eggs. Even so, I've never seen ANY snakes around our house anywhere near the foundation!

Oh, and I just purchased a Tangerine Honduran from a breeder, and I'm looking to be posting here now and then.

Thanks for the "listen".

Drapert,

That's quite exciting knowing that there might be an eastern milksnake living in your basement. Remember though that before brumation (a.k.a. hibernation), they tend to eat less or altogether not eat. If you don't catch him by end of Oct., I would say that you should abandon the idea of feeding him since whatever is inside his stomach needs to be completely digested before he "goes to sleep".

Anyhow, good luck with your search and hope you find him. If you do, post some pics of him or her.
