How many leo or fattials could i keep in a 20 long, i want to put a male and a few females in with him as a small breeding group. And what is the best substrate?

I'd say 1 male to 2 females, at most. 1 male and 1 female would fit more comfortable. Just make sure there is enough shelter in their so they can be alone when needed. You can use tiles, reptile carpet, or paper towels. All of them are inexpensive and relatively easy to clean.

My understanding was that if you put a male with only 1 or 2 females, he may harass them to the point where they get stressed easily. Might be better to keep 2-3 females in the 20 gallon and keep the male in a separate 10 or 15 gallon and introduce him for periods of a couple of days at a time rather than permanently - that way the females will likely be happier long term.
