Spring Mix?

DaviDC. Oct 06, 2006 11:47 AM

Has anyone been able to find Spring Mix since the spinach scare? Today was my 3rd trip to the grocery store & there still wasn't any in the produce section. Thank goodness I found an untapped source of dandelions in the backyard of the empty house next door.

they don't have dandelions, collared greens, etc. at the grocery store? Maybe I'm just spoiled around here. I'm pretty sure you might be able to find some fresh produce that will fit the bill.

Another idea might be to grow their food yourself. I would like to try my hand at that, but right now between the three russians I'm going through pounds of produce every day.

I've heard of spring mix on various sites. What exactly is it?

Spring mix is pretty scarce these days...in addition to dandelions, I'm feeding Mulberry leaves. Friutless Mulberry will also work just as well. Good fiber and calcium. Petunia flowers make my torts come running. I recently bought 25lbs of mazuri tortoise chow. My Hermans and Russians are chowing down on that too(moistened). Their poops look normal and every tortoise feels like a brick when I pick them up because of their increased weight.
Spring mix is not missed(by me).

I know there are alternatives, it's just that I finally tried this stuff a few months ago after hearing about it for years & got spoiled by the convience. None of my tortoises are starving because there's lots of edible things growing around my house & they all LOVE Mazuri.

I've got a tub of endive grown from seeds I've been picking from all summer & 3 different varieties of sedum. Alas, there are no mulberry trees nearby.

hey, any info on growing stuff like endive from seeds? I'd love to grow some stuff indoors for my tortoises to eat. I'm kind of the opposite of you right now, in that I'm trying to get away from dependence on grocery store greens. I guess it's a matter of interest though (I'm interested in plant life, though I know nothing about it).

Any info on how to grow endive (or other foods) would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you're keeping the tortoises well fed on what you've got. Bricks is right! Even my little yearling russian suprises me by his weight! My biggest female is 3 pounds at the moment! I'm pretty impressed by that. This morning I tossed about 4 pounds of leftover vegetation into the big enclosure with my two females and all they left me was som chewed up stems. I think you can tell why I'm trying to find alternatives to buying all their food They're eating me out of house and home!

Good luck with the torts and finding some new foods. I haven't tried any of the mazuri with any of my torts yet.

At least yours will eat what you give em. All the Hank Tank eats is crab grass. Doesn't touch anything else I drop in there.

Havent had to deal with that problem yet. They do eat whatever I throw in for them, however when they are outside roaming around they tend to ignore grass and instead eat the dandelions and plantain leaves.

I do have a very picky bearded dragon, and I think thats mostly because of the way I raised him. If he would only eat one thing I put in for him, thats all I would feed him, so he figured out that he could hold out for the good stuff. I think you are dealing with something different though.

I stop feeding spring mix several months ago. I replace it with weeds and cactus pad. When it snow and no weeds available I might need spring mix again.

Cactus pad consist of 50% of my tortoise diet daily, while other veggie/green mixed the other 50%. No fruits.

Costco now has spring mix that contains no spinach. Other stores will probably soon have the same.
