VERY strange medical condition

Drakken Oct 06, 2006 01:55 PM

I took my BD to the Vet last night because he stopped eating and has been sleeping all day.

She examined him and said everything looked great until she looking into his mouth. On the back of is throat was a dark purple abscess/tumor looking thing. They keep him over night and today they gave him a light anesthetic to check out the lump.

When the Vet looked into his mouth the lump was gone. She then started waking him up and the lump returned. She is now going to take him home for a few days to try and get him to eat and study the strange disappearing/reappearing lump.

BTW, my Vet has been a certified herpetologist for over 30 years and has many herps of her own.

Does anyone have ANY insight on this condition??

I'm sorry I don't have any profesional help. I just wanted to say good luck to you and your beardie. Keep us updated.

Could be the aenesthesia is causing the lump/tumor to fade or receed. Maybe in a relaxed state it isn't noticeable but when the dragon is active or awake partially, it is more promenant...internal pressures perhaps? An xray or that imaging thing that can scan through the body and create a 3d image of all the layers of the body...can't remember what it is called, that may reveal the source of the lump.

Say, I was reading through Reptiles magazine and in the November issue it had a one page article on what sounds like your case. Check it out! It may be useful.

Can you please tell me more about the article? No stores around here have Reptile Magazine.

Probably not terribly helpful--it suggests that lumps in the mouth are most likely abcesses, caused by bacteria, fungi, or parasites. And it suggests "impression cytology". Sorry it's not more help. Thought it was possible you might have the magazine lying around--our local Barnes and Noble carries it where I am. Good luck!

There is only one area in Beardie's mouth that has this thing. The Vet has ruled out bacteria/paracites and such. She is keeping him this week at her house. He may just be bromating.
