Very very fat female, having eggs?

meme_cantu Oct 06, 2006 11:00 PM

Hi

I just got a pair of fischer chameleons, they are awsome, very beautiful. Boh eat very well and doing fine, but i notice the female is very fat...I dont know a lot about chameleon breeding, but how do i know if its gravid, is some way to know if its gravid. Or someone think its just fat?

Thanks

Put a container of washed playsand in her cage that is at least 8" deep and big enough for her to fit into with room to spare. She will dig there (unless she's picky) and lay her eggs. Don't let her see you watching her when she is digging and let her finish laying them and burying them before you take the container to dig them up to put them in the incubator.

I leave a container of sand in all my egglaying female's cages so that they have a place to dig to show they are ready to lay eggs. I then move most of them to a larger egglaying bin.

If there is no place for them to dig to lay the eggs, they could become eggbound and die.

may I add...after you wash the playsand squeeze out as much water as possible so that it is only moist (do not let it dry). The idea is to mimic natural soil which will hold a tunnel without collapsing. You can test this by sticking your finger in the moist sans to see if it holds the tunnel.

As for determining whether she is just fat, you will likely see or at least be able to feel (gently) the eggs which are like oval marbles. Whether they are fertile or not is a whole other thing - check with the breeder on their history.

Can you post a few pics of her?
