Mouth/Eye INFECTION !

Keith Hillson Oct 07, 2006 12:20 AM

Last week I went down to my snake room for the daily clean. I opened one of my boxes containing a 2006 Eastern King and I was shocked to find his eye twice the normal size and all white with puss. His mouth on that side was so swollen and filled with so much infection/puss he couldnt close it. Now I keep my cages very clean I use paper towel as a substrate so I was at a loss as to what happend. I had just looked at him maybe a day and half prior to finding him this way. Then it struck me I had him outside to take pics in my yard a few days before. I put his hide on the ground and set him in there. The first thing he did was start digging with his snout. Im thinking he may have slightly injured his mouth and some bacteria from the dirt caused the infection, Its the only thing I can think of. Anyway I figured he was a goner but I was gonna do what I could. I drained as much infection as I could removing his eye cap (wasnt hard due to the swollen eye). I then flushed his eye and mouth with an antiseptic rinse and applied an antibiotic ointment. I then put him in a small (4 gal) aquarium that gets real hot. About 80 on the cool side and 100 on the hotspot. I know if you keep a reptile extra warm it boosts their immune system. For the next few days I continued to apply the ointment and I noticed his jaw was no longer swollen or deformed. His eye was a red and white scab and he was going into shed. Regardless he ate 3 small pinks and seemed otherwise healthy. He should shed tonight so Ill see if he still has an eye but the infection is gone. This is the first time Ive seen an infection like this in my collection and hopefully the last.

Here is a pic I just took. He should be shed by tonight or tomorrow and Im hoping there is an eye under there but Im not too optimistic there is.

Kieth,

Man, that's a bummer about your snake. Be gald you caught it when you did, you may have saved his life. I don't know about that eye - it looks pretty bad. But, if its gone or non-functional, its really not as big a deal as it looks (NPI). I have owned one-eyed snakes before. they seem to do fairly well. Seeing as snakes are so reliant on chemical cues, they don't seem as put out by loss of an eye as a bird, cat, or human might.

Good Luck - I think you are doing the right thing.

Keep us posted.

Hi Keith,

A friend of mine just dealt with this same issue with one of his adult Chondro's.. Actually his looked worse! We think his was caused by an eye cap that was stuck and became infected. His snake shed out and the eye was under there & looked 100% normal after the shed. We raised the temp like you did, offered food as usual, and keeped the humidity up when he went into gray. Good luck with him and keep us posted..

Yeah thats a pic after the infection has mostly subsided. The side of his head looked 3 times its normal size. He has shed and the eye underneath is sorta cloudy. Maybe one more shed and it will be okay, at least all the swelling is gone.

yes been there. its good treatment your giving.keep it up and good luck. on mine there was an eye but no retnea,or iris and was obviously blinded but it never affected it in anyway and lived a long happy life, it could have gotten something jammed in its lip,or nasal cavity or even eye duct which has festered, but if eating should be able to shake it(infection) on its own, keep the humidity low and temps like ya got them,,,,good luck,,,,,,,,thomas

About 16 years ago I got a young yellowfoot tortoise who developed an eye infection so bad that I actually thought her eyeball came out in a crusty ball of yellow matter custard.

But that was the turning point, and within days her eyelid opened to reveal an eye that she can see out of.

I still have her and she still has her eye. I hope you have the same luck.
