Head and Face issues

cfoley Oct 07, 2006 01:57 AM

I have an 11ft male tiger retic. He has what appears to be an overbite. I think it started with nose rub, but he has since calmed down and its not going away.

He also has what appears to be an abscess about an inch behind his left nostril.

Other than his mouth being slightly forced open from the "overbite" appearance, his mouth looks great- it is very clean inside. He also eats great.

I will take some pictures asap. Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

Here are some pics of what is going on. The first and third are of his mouth. The second, if you look behind his left nostril, you can see a lump. Any ideas???

What's up Chris? Haven't talked to you for awhile. I don't have AOL anymore so I never use the IMs. When did you get a retic? Is/was he eating live? I had a retic a few years ago that got bitten in the mouth by a live rat and he got a nice big abcess like that. It had to be drained regularly and antibiotics injected until it went away. I haven't fed anything live since. Ryan.

Could it be from pushing against the cage ? ive seen a few retics that have done worse pushing against the cage.

It very well could be the case. He did alot when I first got him. He is not doing it as much now though. Does that mean not to worry, and it will recover on its own?

Thanks
Chris

Its possible Im not a vet all I can suggest is to keep it clean and make sure the cage is kept clean. A trip to the vet if it doesnt show any signs of improvement.Just keep an eye on it most of my snake if theyve ever become injured heal surprisingly well on thier own.

Chris, I would take him to the vet to have bloodwork done. I've seen similar problems from pushing, but nothing that severe. If there is an infection it's best to find out as soon as possible so you can start antibiotics. Good luck with him, and keep me posted.
