Welcome back Ratz!

Wow! Now that is what I call a turtle pen! That is going to be terrific when you get it landscaped the way you want. I wish I had as large a yard so I could have a pen that big, but I guess my boxies are happy in what they have. I do believe that everyone on the board has a bit of envy seeing those pictures of your pen. Anyway.......it is really good to turn on the computer and see posts from you again.

I think I speak for everyone when I say "you were missed!!" There is just something neat about turning on the computer each morning and seeing a post from PHRatz. It kind of goes hand in hand with that morning cup of coffee!

Ahh that's so sweet of you to say, thank you so much!
We have dirt that needs to be put in the pen so that I can plant a garden. I gave up trying to grow a flower or any other type of garden in the sand. We have top soil sitting outside the fence now.. it just galls me that we actually paid money to buy DIRT!
LOL
Once we get that moved around then I can buy some plants & get some cover growing in there. Well, IF I can get anything to grow.
My plan is to plant tortoise edible plants of some sort out there so the garden/pen can serve 2 purposes. My plans though seem to go awry most of the time hee hee.

So how are your boxies doing these days? How is your Hobo turtle doing at his new home?

In reply to PHRatz question about how Hobo and my other boxies are doing......they are all doing great! (Thanks for asking Ratz.) I finally put Hobo in with the others after he had had run of the backyard to himself for 3 months. The only reason I did put him in the pen was because I needed to put a bit of fertilizer on the yard, so decided that he could move in with the others out of harms way.

Right now I am trying to really make up my mind as to whether I am going to let them stay outside in their pen this winter or move them into the garage. I have loosened a lot of the ground and added peat moss to the dirt so they can dig deeper down if they want without too much effort, but I still get to thinking that maybe I should just put them back in the big wooden cages they have overwintered in during the past 3-4 years. I guess I worry too much about my turtles.....but I really don't want anything to happen to them.

Anyway......I better make up my mind soon as the nights are starting to get pretty chilly now. Any thoughts from anyone on the subject of whether it is better to move them inside the garage or leave them in the pen would be greatly appreciated.

I hope all are having a good week! Take care...............9boxies

I'm so glad your new Hobo is happy with the group now.
If my Hobo just didn't go after the girls ALL the time, I'd love to keep him with them.
If I ever do get hold of a wild healthy girl who can visit him for a few days maybe I'll let him have a temporary guest LOL!

I've got some lambs quarter seed heads ripening now...meant to rip them weeds out earlier this year since I had nothing to feed it to, but never got around to it. I'll collect the seed and send it to ya after drying it. That weed will grow anywhere <g>. Get enough started in the spring and they should be able to keep the tort happy next year. If you get the dirt down soon, you can even sow it right away and let it winter over normally to sprout on its own next year.

That'd be great. There's an area in the pen where the automatic sprinklers don't hit, there is NOTHING there at all. I'll get my dirt down & that area would be a great spot for this stuff. I can attach a store bought cheapie sprinkler to hose & turn it on in that area.
I so wish I could grow hibiscus there but the one I had died when I apparently put it outside too early in the spring.
I found out last weekend that my mother in law with the green thumb who has huge hibiscus hauls hers indoors for winter.
They really can't take winters in this region. Darn it!
Honeysuckle.. I'm gonna try that next spring too.
