My gecko laid an egg

cammyleon Oct 07, 2006 10:44 AM

My leopard gecko laid an egg in her water dish yesterday, but she has never been with a male. Is this common? Will she lay more?

lol 3 things bud.

1.) If you just got her, usually at the petshop, theres 1 male, with a bunch of females. Most likely you have a female that the male mated with before you got her. Only takes once and your stuck with a few or sometimes a bunch of eggs thru out a season. So this may be one, but if a bunch of sperm could be still left in side her, I would get ready for another egg or eggs soon.

2.)If you have other geckos, make sure you sexed them all correctly, for 1 day I thought my newest High Yellow was a male because she was very active and fast moving, I was wrong , she was a female due to the lack of poors under her.

3.)At very last, its not a egg, this is something eles. Did you see it come out of your Gecko? I doubt its not a egg, because what eles would be in your cage?

If its a egg, take it and place it in a place with soil. Warm place, first 2 weeks of a eggs birth is Critical. You still may be able to save it.

I have the gecko with 2 other females. They are all about 50g and they have no preanal pores or hemipene bulges. I bought them all as babies, so they havent been with a male since then. Maybe one of the other females is actually a male, but I don't see any signs of it. I know female chameleons lay eggs even though they haven't been bred, so I wanted to know if leopard geckos do the same. Thanks for the help!

Female geckos can lay eggs without being with a male. They start producing eggs, don't quote me, around a year...year and a half. The eggs are obviously infertile.

Ignore the guy that doesn't know. But, I agree with Cotton, especially given that it only laid one. It is my understanding (though, I have not experienced it myself) that a female will lay infertile eggs even having never been with a male. Usually, she only produces one egg when this happens and it is smaller than a "normal" leo egg. No doubt, this is what is up, especially if she laid it in the water bowl, she knows nothing is going to grow from it why bother finding a suitable egg spot?

The only thing that seems weird to me is the timing? But hey, who knows, maybe she's been ready since spring and got tired of waiting for "Mr. Right" or something.

The only thing for you to do, would be to hold her up to the light, (and your other females as well) periodically to make sure they aren't binding. Nature should take its course otherwise. good luck!

Yes, well I wouldnt say ignore me, but listin to them more. I learned from them, although I have heard of Chamilion laying eggs without a male, never thought that a Gecko could to. So we both learned something today.

Normally a leo will not lay the eggs if she has not been with a male, but that's not to say she can't or won't lay, I've seen them do it.

Any eggs laid in the water bowl are usually infertile. Unless an suitable lay area was not found.

In your case I would just take another look at the other two females again to make sure they are female, just to be on the safe side. I had sexed for a friend of mine a full grown female as male (I was the third person to say male), due to her being very bulgy and larger than normal pre-anal pores, for a female. Even some of us that know what we are doing get it wrong. Since then, she has been with me this year for the breeding season and produced some awesome babies.
