Will I have to face it?

anafranil Oct 07, 2006 04:05 PM

I probably have to face it,my male veiled won't grow any bigger,I know I have bothered you in the past with this but I am not wiling to accept it,I've been through so much with this cham...It is my first cham and while I was in the process of gettin to know proper chameleon husbandry he went through a couple of long hunger strikes that I am affraid might have cut down on his final size.Any way what done is done,I would like now to know if there is a way to know if he is still growing or not.He was shedding constantly the past few months but has stopped for a couple of months now.Any signs perhaps that can tell he is growing?Very roughly he is about 13-15 months old
Thanks

How big is he? What is your huspantry like?

I had a male veiled also who was only 10.5in and he was 19 months old. This was from him getting bone disease due to me not having a specific UVB light only a full spectrum light.

His body is about 6.5- 7in long without the tail.He is perfectly healthy, nice colours. He surely has no MBD.I think I should avoid describing husbandry since I discussed it a lot the past few months. Please suppose that everything is perfectly fine,I'm quite sure everything runs perfectly.....

Honestly... that doesn't sound that small really.

I feel a lot better now,thanks.

Good. Chameleon tails are generally the same length or a tad longer than snout to vent lengths, putting the chameleon at about 14" total length. A bit on the small size of the species range, but completely normal for a chameleon that has undergon health issues.

In your expierience can hunger strikes have a significant impact on final size?

WillHayward Oct 08, 2006 04:20 PM

Hunger strikes with a healthy chameleon? Probably not.
With an unhealthy chameleon, more than likely.

Chameleons should always be hungry, if you are feeding a lot and then have them go on hunger strikes, I'd bet they were being overfed to beginwith.

I was new when I got him and I followed the advise that chams should eat 15 crix a day, what idiots they are. This is how my problems started.I am now feeding 6 adult brown crickets a day,how about this?

6 sounds much more appropriate for an adult CB veiled without parasites.
