Refrigerator brumation

janeothejungle Oct 07, 2006 07:11 PM

Hello. I started cooling my fluorescent pair down about 3 weeks ago (they are now on 65 days, 55 degree nights) and I'd like to get them down to the high 40's. My question is. If I have an old refrigerator that stays reliably at 45-48 degrees, can I just stick the tubs with the snakes in them directly in there and save myself the trouble of regulating my guest room?? Does anyone use this method??

Is there a minimum viable brumation period? I usually do it for 6-8 weeks, but due to the corn's ready breeding mentality, could I get away with 2 weeks? Any input would be grand, thanks.

Cheers,
Kat

that seems to be pretty low, compared to what I have heard.

I do colubrid research and most of the signs point to a 'true dormancy' being part of a normal cycle. (ie winter is long and cold, or at least it was when I grew up in appalachia). It's worked really well the last 3 years with my kings. It's just a pain in the butt trying to keep an entire room regulated. Hence the potential of a regulated fridge. I could always boost it up to a steady 50 if I was worried about fluctuation.

why would you do that, corns are good at 65 degrees, theres no need at all to bring it that low. theres just no point
